■総評
留学生の人数も集まり、和気藹々とした雰囲気の中で山を歩き通すことができた。矢倉岳は歩きやすさの面でも新歓ハイクにはピッタリで、開けた山頂も皆さんに気に入ってもらえた。後半の古道は倒木などもあって歩きづらさはあったが、傾斜はほぼないのでスニーカーで困る道ではなかった。
途中で分岐を間違った方に進んでしまい、作業員用の道を進んでしまった。ピンクテープは信用できないと改めて痛感した。また、事前説明での周知が不十分で、一名短パンを履いてきてしまった留学生がいた。

■ルート概況
矢倉沢登山口〜矢倉岳：一般的な樹林帯。斜度はきついが、整備され歩きやすい
矢倉岳〜足柄峠：比較的ゆるやか。道がわかりづらい場所が何箇所かある
足柄峠〜足柄駅：足柄城内や芭蕉句碑を超えた先は、整備されておらず歩きづらい。次第に道が広くなっていき、車道合流後の沢沿いの道は歩きづらさを感じるところはない。


■山行記（Yu）

This is a welcome event for international students this semester. At
first, we considered several locations. Egawa san suggested a mountain
in Saitama that was closer to his home, while I proposed a few
mountains previously organized by Raicho. Unfortunately, although I
had never been to those places, Egawa san had already visited them
all, so we had to renegotiate. We unanimously agreed that for a hike
aimed at international students, routes with views of Mt. Fuji and the
ocean would be the most appealing. In the end, we chose the
Yagura-dake (矢倉岳) and Ashigara Kodo (足柄古道) route, located in the
western part of Kanagawa Prefecture, in the northern area of the
Hakone Mountains. The trail heads westward, reaching Shizuoka
Prefecture. Along the way, there are scenic views of the bay and Mt.
Fuji, and the route is very easy.

Our event took place on the Saturday of the May Festival, which may
have affected the willingness of some potential participants (I
think). The weather forecast was bad and consistently predicted rain.
I had such bad luck this semester—both events ended up on cloudy days,
making it hard to enjoy the sea and Mt. Fuji. Fortunately, it didn’t
rain, and visibility was decent—we managed to see Mt. Fuji.

After meeting at Matsuda Station, we took a bus to the trailhead.
After self-introductions, we started hiking. This was my first time
serving as SL. I brought two trekking poles and a telescope for
everyone, but no one used them. The climb was mostly through the
forest and quite humid, but we reached the summit—the highest point of
the entire hike—by just after 10 a.m., meaning most of the ascent was
done. At the summit of Yagura-dake, we rested for a long time. From
there, we had views of Sagami Bay, Odawara City, the steaming Hakone
volcano, and Mt. Fuji. I flew my drone there... but the scenery looked
pretty much the same as from the summit.

Afterward, we continued west, passing through more forest and briefly
taking a wrong turn. The hike was nearly over at that point. We
followed a paved road and arrived at Ashigara Castle, now a park with
beautiful grass, roses, and the ruins of the old castle. We rested
here for quite a while. This spot lies on the border between Kanagawa
and Shizuoka Prefectures. We could enjoy a closer view of Mt. Fuji and
see its northern uplift from within Shizuoka, which was quite
impressive. Unfortunately, due to the weather, we couldn’t see Suruga
Bay, which was disappointing.

We then descended along the Ashigara Kodo, which was an easy and
pleasant walk. The trail continued through the forest, and a small
stream accompanied us. We took a long break near a clear water pool.
After that, we exited the woods and returned to town. Mt. Fuji
revealed its full form, with snow clearly visible at the peak. There
was no one on the streets. The children’s playground was overgrown
with weeds, and the seesaws looked like they hadn’t been used in a
long time—perhaps a reflection of Japan’s aging population. We
eventually reached Ashigara Station. Next to it was a civic center
with a unique design. A group of swallows had built nests there. They
flew very close to people, sometimes heading straight at me before
veering off only a meter away. This scared me, since I’ve had many
unpleasant encounters with crows at the Komaba campus—they also fly
straight at me and caw loudly. Why are there crows at UTokyo instead
of swallows?

In any case, it was a very relaxing and enjoyable hike. The scenery
along the route was top-class (in some aspects), and it would
definitely be worth experiencing again on a sunny day.

■感想
CL Egawa
・Holding a hiking event in English was a challenge to me, but I am
relieved it worked out well
・The weather wasn’t perfect, but we could see great views, which
exceeded my expectations!
・I might hold some english hiking event again in the future

SL Yu
・It seems like I am having some bad luck: It is been cloudy twice this
semester for events (last one was Numazu Alps), so I have not been
able to enjoy the beautiful ocean and Mount Fuji.
・I believe I will come back here again!

◯ Suzuki(46)
・I didn’t have much confidence in my English speaking skill, but every
participant was so kind that they asked again when they couldn't hear
me. Thanks to that,  I made it through.
・As I went back home, I found I was extremely exhausted but looking
forward to the next English hike.
・USTEP students were very eager to discuss the current situation and
problems of Japan, especially the competitive university entrance
exam.
